Millionaire contestant with progressive MS shares how he plans to spend prize money

This Morning hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield spoke to the latest contestant on the new series of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Andrew Townsley.

Andrew was the first person to reach the final, million pound question on the show, now presented by Jeremy Clarkson, for 14 years.

Unsure of the answer, he chose to walk away with £500,000 - but when he was quizzed on what he would have guessed the answer was - it was correct.

So had he guessed, he would have been a millionaire today - but if he had guessed wrong he would have left with only £64,000.

"With the security that this win gives me, I couldn't take a £400,000 bet," he said.

But retired doctor Andrew is still delighted with his win and revealed he hopes to attend The Ashes next year with his prize money, and to visit the Niagara Falls.

Andrew has lived with progressive Multiple Sclerosis for 20 years, and revealed the condition will likely leave him housebound until 2021 because of the coronavirus.

"I think once the world recovers I’ll have some thoughts about it," he said.

"But unfortunately with the MS, I’m very restricted and stuck in the house probably until this time next year."

He explained how the condition had affected his life: "Over time I’ve been living with it now for about 20 years, I’ve gone from being a rugby player to someone who is really quite restricted within the chair."

But, he said, he has not deteriorated noticeably since the show was filmed in December.

He also revealed he deliberately did not tell his friend that it was the million pound question when he used his Phone a Friend lifeline.

He said this was because the intense pressure may have put her off or made her panic, and he wanted her to be thinking clearly.

"It would be much better to come at the question as a question, rather than with an amount of money attached to it," he said.
