Hundreds of masked protesters will descend on central London this evening for an annual Bonfire Night protest by activist group Anonymous.

The activist group Anonymous are set to march through the capital for the so-called Million Mask March on Monday night.

Scores of people are expected to descend on Trafalgar Square and Westminster in protest against the government and capitalism.

Police said a policing plan is in place to cope with the expected large numbers of people, but have not confirmed how many officers will be on duty.

In previous years, Scotland Yard has urged protesters to work with them to ensure a safe and peaceful protest after past demos were marred by violence.

Monday evening’s demonstration is expected to take place between 6pm and 9pm on a prescribed route between Trafalgar Square and Whitehall.

In previous years, the march has seen crowds light fireworks and flares as a large group gather donned in Guy Fawkes masks.

Last year 25 people were arrested during the anti-capitalist Bonfire Night demonstration, and while demonstrators chanted slogans and let off fireworks, there was little trouble.

Police said most people were arrested for public order offences and others were held for firework-related incidents or possession of drugs or offensive weapons.

First held in 2013, the march has set off from central London every year since with Anonymous calling for people from around the world to join in.

The event is held every year on Bonfire Night, as scores of Londoners celebrate by watching firework demonstrations.

Thousands are thought to have taken part in the marches since its launch five years ago. Other marches take place in cities around the world.
