Ice haul 'concealed in underpants' at Hobart Airport, police allege

A man allegedly carrying around a kilogram of drugs in his underpants has been greeted by a police drug dog at Hobart Airport.

The 31-year-old Hobart man was apprehended after disembarking a flight from Sydney on Friday and charged with trafficking in a controlled drug.

Police allege the man had concealed methamphetamine in his underwear, and was detected by the dog handling unit as part of "ongoing searches, linked to sound intelligence".

They allege he was in possession of an amount in excess of half of the all the ice seized by police last year, a total of 1,738 grams.

The man appeared in court on Saturday.

Police said recent intelligence and arrests reinforced the view that illicit drugs were being imported into the state, rather than being manufactured locally.

On Thursday, two men were allegedly caught trying to smuggle more than 260 grams of cocaine into Tasmania through Hobart Airport after disembarking a flight from Sydney.

Police allege a 36-year-old man from Redan in Victoria and a 26-year-old man from Mowbray in Tasmania had the drug hidden in their clothing.

The two men were also allegedly carrying almost half a kilogram of methamphetamines.

The drugs have a combined estimated street value of more than $250,000.
