Miller's God slot

We are puzzled by Jonathan Miller's criticisms of What the World Thinks of God (Catherine Bennett, G2, February 26) since he had been well briefed in advance about the poll and the programme. We were disappointed when he left the New York studio during the discussion, as his contribution so far had been most interesting. We are reassured that the other panellists - including Nigeria's Cardinal Arinze, Professor Susan Greenfield and playwright Ariel Dorfman - do not share his views.

Would anyone in the diversity debate (February 26) care to explain exactly how many "races" of human beings there are? Like a fool, I have been going around assuming only one, albeit fallen. Rev Alec Mitchell Racial justice officer Diocese of Manchester

Is the Polly Toynbee who objects to Nader standing the same as the one who helped found the SDP (Comment, February 25)? Does she not really mean the left should support the centre, but not vice versa? Isn't that why Nader has every reason to stand?

The name of the pie pastry is hot water crust (Letters, February 25). The recipe is in Leith's Cookery Bible. Secret lies in not allowing the water to boil before the fat has melted. Bon appetit.

It's interesting to hear about the dusk roost of pied wagtails in trees outside the Marks & Spencer branch in Newton Abbot (Birdwatch, February 23). Every evening since before Christmas a large flock of these fine birds has been turning up in York - in trees outside M&S. Is this brand loyalty, or what?
