Millennium Bridge will be bathed in darkness as a mark of respect to Prince Philip

A North East landmark will be bathed in darkness tonight to mark the death of the Duke of Edinburgh.

On Friday the Royal Family announced that Prince Philip died aged 99.

A statement from Buckingham Palace said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”

Gateshead Council took to Twitter to announce that the arch of the Millennium Bridge will be in darkness this evening as a mark of respect.

Flags at the borough's civic buildings have also been lowered to half mast to pay tribute to the Royal.

The authority tweeted: "It is with great sadness that Gateshead Council has heard the news of the death of HRH, the Duke of Edinburgh.

" Flags at official buildings in Gateshead have been lowered to half-mast.

"As a mark of respect, the arch of Gateshead Millennium Bridge will be in darkness this evening."

Coun Martin Gannon, Leader of Gateshead Council, also paid his respects to the monarch.

He added: “The nation has lost a man who served the country as Prince Consort to Her Majesty The Queen for 67 years and the Royal Family has lost a much loved father, grandfather and great grandfather."
