The Millennium building in Tollcross Park can be demolished to make way for a nursery, the council has ruled.
Glasgow’s education department has received permission for an early learning and childcare centre on the site.
It will be able to cater for 87 pre-school children, aged between two and five.
The building, constructed in 2000, will be detached from the B-listed Winter Gardens and knocked down.
Building the nursery is part of the council’s efforts to meet the Scottish Government’s pledge to provide 1140 hours free childcare for all three to five-year-olds and some eligible two-year-olds.
Play rooms, an outdoor area, dining space, reception and administration area have been planned for the new nursery.
The plans stated Glasgow City Council is “committed to providing new build early learning and childcare facilities in areas where high demand for early years places exceeds existing physical capacity”.
“The current dilapidated condition of the site attracts anti-social behaviour, and the listed winter gardens structure has been subject to vandalism,” the application added.
A repairs plan for the Winter Gardens, which is on the Buildings at Risk register, was recently approved by the city council.
Funding for that project will come from the Scottish Town Centre Regeneration Fund, with £1m awarded in August 2019 and £250,000 in October last year.
The new nursery will be open from 8am to 6pm on Monday to Friday.
