Mill where huge fire broke out destroying several businesses is being treated as a 'possible crime scene'

A mill where a huge fire broke out destroying a number of small businesses - including a gym owned by former world boxing champion Anthony Crolla - is being treated as a 'possible crime scene'.

Investigators say they have examined the 'origin and cause' of Sunday morning's blaze at Morton Mill in Failsworth and are treating it as potentially suspicious.

It comes as work begins to demolish the 106-year-old building.

At the height of the blaze, which was reported at 5.20am on Sunday, about 40 firefighters were on the scene.

Pictures and video of the blaze show flames shooting above the rooftops of surrounding buildings.

It's thought around 10 small businesses, including a number of gyms, a furniture store and a sign writing firm, are based in Morton Mill.

Among them is Fox Amateur Boxing Club, where Crolla learnt the ropes as a youngster.

Earlier today the former WBA lightweight world champion, who now owns the club, told the Manchester Evening News : "It's heart-breaking to be honest.

"I can't get my head round it.

"I've got lots of great memories from there. I trained there as a kid, I trained there as a pro.

"But it's not just about me. It's about the kids in the club. It's about my friends who have other businesses in there.

"It's their whole livelihood. They've put so many hours in, they've put their hearts and souls into building up their businesses.

"It's a huge part of the community. This is going to affect so many people.

"There are lots more worrying things going on in the world right now, but this hard to take."

As the fire raged Oldham Road was closed, nearby residents were told to keep windows and doors shut, the electricity supply was cut to several homes and trams on the Rochdale line were also suspended.

Firefighters remained on the scene on Sunday afternoon dampening down the remains of the mill.
