Milk recalled over possible E.coli contamination

An urgent recall has been issued for a farm shop’s milk in Northern Ireland over fears it could be contaminated with E.coli.

Kenneth Hanna’s Farm Shop in Northern Ireland has recalled its raw Jersey milk after a product containing E.coli contaminated it.

Customers who have purchased the milk have been advised to return it or throw it away.

The recall applies to all use-by and batch codes, but it only in effect in Northern Ireland.

The Food Standards Agency said: “Symptoms caused by STEC (E.coli) organisms include severe diarrhoea (including bloody diarrhoea), abdominal pain, and sometimes haemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious condition that can lead to kidney failure and can be fatal

“If you are experiencing these symptoms, you should stay away from work, school, or nursey until you have stopped having symptoms for at least 48 hours to avoid passing it on to others.”

E.coli is the most well known strain of STEC, (Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli). It is often linked to foodborne outbreaks from undercooked beef, raw produce, or unpasteurized dairy.

Raw milk is unpasteurised and has been hailed a natural superfood, packed with gut-friendly bacteria and nutrients. However, it has not been heat treated to kill of bacteria.

In addition to E.coli, other bacteria such as Listeria and Salmonella have been found in raw, unpasteurised milk.
