Military reports less violence during Ramadan this year

Violent incidents in the deep South decreased by more than 60% during Ramadan following stepped-up security measures in certain villages, according to the Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc) Region 4.

Col Thanawee Suwannarat, deputy spokesman of Isoc Region 4 Forward Command, said attacks had dropped by 66% when compared with the number of incidents recorded last year.

He attributed the improvement to the deployment of 735 security units in target villages around-the-clock and the setting up of a security checkpoint in every village with the help of civilians and local administrators.

The measures were part of the Fourth Army's efforts to deter militants from carrying out attacks, he said.

According to Col Thanawee, violence during the holy month intensified in 2016 which saw multiple bomb attacks and casualties.

The situation has improved in years since and this year saw a significant decline.

He also gave assurances that heightened surveillance would be maintained while urging residents to help act as the eyes and ears of the authorities who are ramping up efforts to prevent violence and crack down on drug trafficking in the region.
