'Military police' at scene of M57 crash which forced motorway to be closed

A major crash forced the closure of the M57, with drivers reporting hours of tailbacks and "military police" heading to the scene.

Several drivers stuck in the traffic have reported seeing the military police heading to the scene of the accident this morning. It is unclear whether they were part of the emergency services operation.

After all three lanes were blocked by North West Motorway Police earlier this morning, this was reduced to one lane between J2 A57 Liverpool Road (Prescot) and J1 M62 J6 (Tarbock Island).

Among those taking to social media were Deborah Smith, who said: "Anyone know what’s happened in M57 cos I've been stuck in standing traffic for 30 mins already."

Neil said: "Avoid M57 south. Haven't moved for 30 minutes from J2. Military police car has just gone past."

William Carr said: "Accident on M57 J1 - just seen the Military Police heading to scene of accident."
