Military planes spotted over Greater Manchester again today

Two military planes were spotted flying over Greater Manchester again today.

The RAF has been making the most of the clear skies and empty runways during the coronavirus lockdown, carrying out various training exercises.

People said they saw the aircraft over Tameside, Stockport and Wigan.

A C-130J Hercules, from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, could be seen travelling between Newcastle and Manchester this morning.

The RAF confirmed a C-17 Globemaster aircraft was also operating in essential training this afternoon in the areas of Manchester and Birmingham.

In a post on Facebook, the RAF said the aircraft were "engaged in essential training", adding they were necessary and routine flights "not connected with RAF support to the UK's fight against Coronavirus".

A C-17 Globemaster was also spotted in the Manchester area last week.

The huge aircraft has a 51.74m wingspan and can transport 100,000lb (45,360kg) of freight more than 4,500nm (8,334km) while flying at altitudes above 35,000ft, according to the Ministry of Defence.

According to the RAF website, is the RAF’s "primary tactical transport aircraft".

It is often used in countries or regions where there is a possible threat to aircraft.
