Military plane spotted in the skies over Liverpool

A giant military aircraft flying low over the largely deserted streets of Liverpool city centre caused a stir.

Witnesses said the noise attracted their attention first, before it was seen silhouetted against a clear blue sky yesterday afternoon.

One said their attention was drawn by "a loud sound" heard on North John Street late afternoon yesterday.

He added: "It was fairly low over the city centre. It was an impressive sight as you looked to the sky.

"I think it was a Nimrod but I'm no expert."

During lockdown a number of planes in the sky have attracted attention - perhaps because it has been so rare to see aircraft with advice against all but essential travel.

In April, a plane was spotted "zigzagging" over Liverpool during a strange flight path from Speke.

The Ravenair plane was also captured on a flight tracking app which showed how it crossed the city multiple times on Tuesday before returning to land at Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

A number of people contacted the ECHO to find out if there was any reason for the bizarre journey, which showed the RVR7NK flight cross areas of Merseyside dozens of times and fly back to base.

The plane also did a number of crossings over Ellesmere Port slightly later in the day.

Explaining the flying pattern, Ravenair operations director, Wayne Barrett revealed that the aircraft was taking part in a aerial survey and they had all the necessary permissions to do so.
