A CRPF jawan was injured in an attack by militants in Srinagar on Saturday afternoon.
An official said the jawan suffered bullet injuries in a leg when militants opened fire on an installation of the 29 Battalion in Nowgam area.
The police said the area was immediately cordoned off to trace the attackers. No outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The injured jawan, identified as Head Constable Manoj Kumar Yadav, was shifted to a hospital where his condition was stated to be stable, officials said.
Amid the development, the chief of a recently-floated militant outfit was arrested in Jammu.
The police said Hidayatullah Malik alias Hasnain, chief of Lashkar-e-Mustafa (LeM), believed to be a shadow organisation of the Jaish-e-Mohammad, was nabbed during an operation.
Around 3.30 p.m., Malik attacked a search party and tried to escape from a spot. “The team, however, displayed exemplary discipline and apprehended him tactfully despite the Kunjwani area of Jammu being a very crowded place,” the police said.
While dismantling the structure of LeM, efforts of the Anantnag police led to the arrest of Malik. “The first arrest in this chain was Ayaz Bhat of Anantnag, from whom one pistol was recovered on January 18. On his disclosure, two more terror associates, namely Rayees Mir of Pampore and Shakir Itoo of Shopian, were arrested. Later, four more terror associates hailing from Anantnag were arrested and two pistols, AK-47 rounds and hand grenades recovered,” the police said.
It was during the course of investigation, the arrested terrorist associates revealed that Malik was put up in Bathindi area of Jammu and he planned a major attack in Jammu. Incriminating materials, including two pistols and grenades, have been recovered from his possession, the police said.
LeM was also responsible for an IED blast in January in south Kashmir, which left one soldier dead, the police added.
