One CRPF jawan and two civilians were injured in an encounter that broke out after militants attacked a BSF convoy in Kulgam on Thursday afternoon.

Police officials said the militants, likely two, took shelter inside a multi-storey building “forcing the security forces to slow down the operation”.

“The two trapped terrorists were still alive. We are taking all precautions for lesser collateral damage as target building is huge one,” IGP Vijay Kumar said.

According to the police assessment, the militants are affiliated to the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

Earlier in the day, IGP Kumar said terrorists had fired upon a BSF convoy on the national highway in Kulgam’s Mir Bazaar area.

Eyewitnesses said the firing was fierce and people were seen running for safety.

The operation also impacted the traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway.
