Miley Cyrus pulled the biggest surprise of the 2015 VMAs, bigger even than Kanye West announcing his presidential bid, by announcing a new album, available immediately, for free. She let the world know about the new record from the stage as she closed the show, which she hosted.

Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz is the 23-track fruit of her collaboration with Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne, and also features Ariel Pink. Big Sean and Mike Will Made It, among others.

Cyrus spoke to the New York Times about the album, telling of Coyne’s influence on her work. “He’s everything in the world – you can’t even define us,” she said. “I am 100% in love with Wayne, and Wayne is in love with me, but it’s nothing sexual in any way. That would be the grossest.”

The album cost around $50,000 to make, compared to the “couple million” her previous album, Bangerz, cost. She added that she didn’t expect to return completely to the mainstream. “I don’t think I’ll grow that way,” she said. “It seems like it would be backwards.”
