Miley Cyrus has responded to the backlash over her recent comments about sexuality, after telling fans she previously thought she “had to be gay” as “all guys were evil.”
Speaking during an Instagram live broadcast, the 26-year-old singer told her followers not to “give up” on men as there are “good men out there.”
“There are good men out there guys, don’t give up,” she said. “You don’t have to be gay, there are good people with d**ks out there, you’ve just got to find them.
“I always thought I had to be gay because I thought all guys were evil but it’s not true. There are good people out there that just happen to have d**ks.”
Her comments sparked criticism on social media as fans suggested that the singer was implying that sexuality is a choice.
In a tweet shared last night, Cyrus clarified her remarks, saying that her “priority” was to “protect the LGBTQ community.”
“I was talking s*** about sucky guys, but let me be clear, YOU don’t CHOOSE your sexuality,” she wrote.
“You are born as you are. It has always been my priority to protect the LGBTQ community I am a part of.”
Cyrus revealed that she is pansexual in 2015. She is currently in a relationship with Australian singer Cody Simpson after breaking up with Kaitlynn Carter, the reality star she briefly dated in the aftermath of her split from husband Liam Hemsworth.
Speaking about her relationship with Hemsworth in an interview with Vanity Fair earlier this year, the musician said that being married to the actor did not erase her queer identity.
“We’re redefining, to be f****** frank, what it looks like for someone that’s a queer person like myself to be in a hetero relationship,” she told the magazine.
“A big part of my pride and my identity is being a queer person. What I preach is: People fall in love with people, not gender, not looks, not whatever. What I’m in love with exists on almost a spiritual level. It has nothing to do with sexuality.”
