Imagine, if you will, I am listening to the Miley Cyrus sing a song for Pandora. You’re vibing and the chorus comes in. That chorus? A tune I recognize but can’t quiet place. And then suddenly, BOOM, it hits me: Is this “I’ll Stand By You”?
Now, don’t get me wrong, I do love the song. But imagine you have just watched over 3 hours of the blue people movies and then heard Miley Cyrus singing. Her song is titled “Dream As One,” written for Avatar: Fire and Ash. The song itself is referencing the Na’vi’s ability to connect with one another and their Mother Earth.
But even with the beautiful message of the song, I did have to stop listening to it to figure out what song the chorus really reminded me of. So first, let’s take a listen…
The song itself doesn’t sound like anything other than a new Miley Cyrus banger. That is, until you get to the chorus. “Even through the pain, even through the ashes in the sky” Cyrus sings. And it is the part of the song that had me pausing and wondering what it reminded me of.
And now that you have the song in your head, here is “I’ll Stand By You” by the Pretenders.
The “Oh, why you look so sad?” part of “I’ll Stand By You” does read the same was as “Even through the pain, even through the ashes in the sky” when listening to the two songs. Whether that is just, as Charlie Puth explained, interpolation and songs sounding similarly thanks to a 12 note scale or a specific choice from Cyrus is unknown.
I do hope that someone on the internet makes a mash-up of the two songs. Because I can see the Jake Sully edits now and I need them in my life.
