Wowsers trousers, there was a heck of a lot of fur going down on the Gucci catwalk in Milan last week for autumn/winter 2011. Perhaps it was carried away with its 90th anniversary. Regardless, creative director Frida Giannini looks rather smashing. Tidy, sleek pony, super-chic blouse with on-trend polkas and a pair of wide-as-you-like slacks (you’ll need a pair of these for this/next season). Her latest collection for the Italian mega brand was high-voltage. Think pussy bows, fedoras, dresses with splits and lashings of leather. Photograph: Antonio de Moraes Barros Filho/WireImage
Jil Sander’s current spring collection – all couture shapes and neon – was a critical smash hit. Underlining designer Raf Simons’s wit, various outfits on the catwalk were teamed with what at first glance appeared to be some old carrier bags. Can you imagine, darling? But no, no, no. Simons had instead re-imagined this basic supermarket checkout item into a transparent acetate piece of fashion kit. Word is they’re selling quicker than you can say Club Card.

An autumn look to adopt now is circles. Marc Jacobs did them big time in NYC. In London, David Koma and James Long joined the fray while Fashion East’s Lulu Kennedy was already showcasing a pair of hot-off-the-runway dotty gold boots by Louise Gray. If you’re feeling the dot, then Emporio Armani is your NBF; just look at these dinky loafers. They also come in cream and navy, which are ideal with a pair of old battered, rolled-up jeans.

Whoosh. In a wondrous skirt. Well, thanks to Marni – which unveiled its latest collection in Milan yesterday – you can. It’s a bit ballet this one, what with the tulle – but because it’s not pink, it’s got a spikiness that makes it fashiony rather than girly. Sheers layered over other fabrics emerged as a micro-trend at the London shows, so once again, you’re gonna be ahead of le pack. Style with a plain T-shirt tucked in and some hefty heeled shoes.

Or should that be tippet? Oh the jokery. Let’s rewind to last September when Mrs Prada’s catwalk featured natty fur stoles in jolly colours. Boy did the fashion desk have the royal hump – collectively, we don’t do fur. But then came the call from Prada HQ with an announcement: said stoles were going faux! Cue whoops and cheers and much throwing of fluffy items around necks.
