Mikolaj Oledzki wants to 'rock a few heads' with more aggressive defence

As Leeds Rhinos' new number eight, Mikolaj Oledzki has established himself as the club's senior front-rower.

But the Polish prop has no intentions of resting on his laurels having secured the sought-after jersey. If anything, it has reiterated his need to further improve.

Oledzki's rise has been impressive, with the 22-year-old enjoying his best season to date in 2020, lifting the Challenge Cup along the way.

His career appears to be on an upward curve, with former Rhinos prop Barrie McDermott tipping him for international honours in the near future.

But Oledzki insists he has loads of work to do on his game.

"Coming through the ranks number 8 or ten was the shirt I always wanted to play in but I didn't think it would come this early," he said.

"I'm chuffed to bits but on the other hand, a shirt can be taken away from you as easy as it was given to you. I still need to keep on top of things, keep improving and give Kev (Sinfield) and Rich (Agar) no excuses to take that number away from me.

"I've got to keep doing the small things right and be more consistent in my performances.

"I think there's a lot of elements in my game I can and need to improve. The main one is the defensive side of things, but consistency is the bigger factor for this year.

"Last year I'd have a few good games then a bad game and need to get back into the flow. Personally, I just want to get rid of those bad spells or bad weeks where I'm not playing well. I want to be a player Rich can rely on week in, week out, so he knows what he's going to get from me. That's the aim for this year."

Additionally, the powerhouse is working on using his enormous frame more effectively when it comes to his defence.

"It's the line speed and the aggressive side of my defence I need to work on, to be that player who comes out of the line and sets the platform for the game.

"I've got a fair bit of weight behind me and I need to find a better way of using that weight and start being more aggressive in defence and look for that contact.

"I just want to be solid in contact, rock a few heads, be a solid defender and get a bit more shoulder in."
