Mikey Johnston insists Celtic must restore Europa League pride as Hoops face Kristoffer Ajer sweat

Mikey Johnson insists Celtic must rise to the challenge of restoring pride in Europe as they face a sweat over key stopper Kristoffer Ajer.

The Parkhead outfit tackle AIK Stockholm on Thursday in the first leg of their Europa League play off.

Celtic are determined to secure a spot in the group stages of the continent’s second competition having crashed out of the Champions League six days ago.

Johnston insists the troops want to make amends for the Cluj catastrophe and said: “Everybody has to find it within themselves.

“We are playing in a massive game for a massive club. We all have to be up for it and everyone will be.

“We are a winning club and not getting into the Champions League is huge disappointment for the fans, but we need to make the results happen and get everyone positive.

“It would be good to get a good result to take over to Sweden and we will work hard to do that.

“Europe is massive to the fans and we want to try and get a run there. Get the results racking up and get the fans back on side again. We still have a lot to play for.”

Manager Neil Lennon is hoping to have another new signing confirmed ahead of the tie and will also get confirmed news on the health of Ajer on Monday.

The Norwegian was replaced during the weekend win over Dunfermline after injuring a shoulder.

Lennon revealed after the game he was confident Ajer would be fit for AIK and medical staff are expected to confirm the situation as the manager begins making plans for the clash with the Swedes.
