Mikel Arteta wants Arsenal transfer for Mykola Matviyenko after Man City recommendation

Arsenal are in talks to sign Mykola Matviyenko, who Gunners boss Mikel Arteta recommended Manchester City land when he was assistant there.

That's according to Matviyenko's agent Yuriy Danchenko, who claims he has been in talks with Arsenal all week in regards to selling the Shakhtar Donetsk centre-back.

Arsenal are in desperate need of strengthening their defence, and have been linked to a whole host of stars including Dayot Upamecano and Jerome Boateng.

Matviyenko has now moved to the front of the queue, according to the player's agent.

"Recently, my colleagues and I have been constantly in contact with representatives of the Arsenal, and have had meetings," Danchenko, told Ukrainian media.

"The Gunners' hierarchy have already contacted [Shakhtar], and we hope that these negotiations will succeed."

This isn't the first time Matviyenko has been linked with a move to the Premier League, with the 23-year-old previously on the radar at Manchester City.

According to Ukrainian publication TEAM1, current Arsenal boss Arteta - who was assistant at Man City under Pep Guardiola - encouraged the Citizens to sign Matviyenko.

City missed out on doing so, and now that the Spaniard is in charge of the Gunners, it appears he is interested in signing the defender for Arsenal.

Arteta had a look at the centre-back in action in Shakhtar's two Champions League matches with Manchester City this season.
