Mikel Arteta urged to field new midfield partnership that can revive Arsenal's hopes

Thomas Partey has been pictured back training at London Colney as he continues to make a positive return from injury, football.london understands.

The 28-year-old suffered a blow to his right ankle in a pre-season clash with Chelsea which immediately forced him from the field of play to receive medical attention.

Partey, who arrived at the Emirates last summer in a £45 million move from Atletico Madrid, has been working towards regaining match fitness over the international break in a bid to revive Mikel Arteta's uninspiring start to the season versus Norwich City.

Arsenal and Norwich both sit bottom of the Premier League and neither are yet to tally a point to their name as either side looks to climb the table.

With Partey seemingly back in the frame for selection versus the Canaries, our Arsenal Way team discussed the potential partnership of the Ghanian with Albert Sambi Lokonga.

The latter, who joined Arsenal this summer from Anderlecht in a deal worth £18 million, has been able to offer a flickering light of hope for the Gunners during what has been a glum start to the campaign.

Chris Davison, The Arsenal Way content editor, spoke to Tom Canton, The Arsenal Way writer and presenter, to explore the potential partnership between Partey and Lokonga, claiming that the pair could propel the side to a fresh start, live on the Arsenal Way show via football.london's Arsenal Facebook page.

Canton kickstarted the debate by posing a question to Davison, looking into the impact which the Ghanian could have despite Granit Xhaka's suspension and Mohamed Elneny being available too.

"No disrespect to Elneny but Partey just brings so much more in his overall play," began Davison.

"He's such a talented player and I don't think we have seen the best of him just yet, because of his reoccurring injury problems. But what he has shown in pre-season is how assuring he is on the ball and in our progressive play. It'll be a massive boost to have him back in our team. We have severely missed him."

Davison continued, delving into the exciting relationship that could blossom between Partey and Lokonga.

He said: "The partnership has the potential to be really exciting; Partey will bring the stability as much as he does like to go forward and pick out passes - he is important to our progressive play - but so is Lokonga.

[Lokonga] looks to make things happen, he keeps things moving, he is very hard-working and he puts in a defensive shift when he needs to.

It has the potential to be a really exciting partnership. They bring much-needed energy to the middle of the park."

Davison continued as he highlighted Lokonga's promising start to life in north London, having recently been handed his senior international debut for Belgium.

"[Lokonga's] been really exciting so far and has shown some encouraging signs," Davison said. "I'm intrigued by him and the partnership with Partey has the potential to work really well. Maybe it's the slight change we needed and hopefully it can change our fortunes."
