Mikel Arteta told who to sign next to help Arsenal compete for the Premier League title

Former Arsenal centre-back Tony Adams believes the Gunners are only two signings away from being able to launch an assault on the Premier League title.

Since Mikel Arteta took over at the Emirates Stadium almost a year ago, Arsenal have been a club on an upward trajectory, with them having won both the FA Cup and the FA Community Shield.

As well as adding two pieces of silverware to the trophy cabinet, the Gunners have also proven to be active in the transfer market, as they look to try and turn themselves back into top-four contenders. The summer's transfer window saw the Gunners sign Atletico Madrid midfield enforcer Thomas Partey and Brazilian centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes in a big-money deals, as well as landing former Chelsea winger Willian.

Though Arsenal's first seven Premier League outings this season have featured defeats to the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City, they ended their Old Trafford hoodoo on Sunday by defeating Manchester United 1-0, thanks to a second half penalty from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

It was a fantastic performance from the Gunners, who were predicted, by many, to struggle against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, following the Red Devils' outstanding 5-0 win over RB Leipzig in the Champions League last Wednesday evening.

However, Arsenal delivered an assured showing to leave Manchester with all three points in the bag.

Having finally ended their Old Trafford curse, former Gunners defender Adams insists he has now seen enough of Arteta's team this season to believe they can soon mount a genuine charge for the title.

“They’ll finish above United. I think they’re a top six team,” Adams told Stadium Astro. “There are some great positive signs, but they are missing a goalkeeper and a number 10, someone up-front, to be champions.

“We have a couple of leaders in central defence and midfield. We’re getting closer.”

Adams' reference to Arsenal needing to add a new goalkeeper to their ranks comes as little surprise, with Emiliano Martinez, who acted as Bernd Leno's deputy for much of last season, having made the switch to Aston Villa during the transfer window.

Arsenal did replace Martinez with 25-year-old Icelandic shot-stopper Runar Alex Runarsson, but some believe Arsenal do require a more senior option to fill in for Leno should the Germany international pick up an injury, just as he did last season.

Adding another midfielder to the squad is also a sensible call from Adams, with Arsenal having been very interested in Lyon ace Houssem Aouar throughout the summer.

Arsenal did see a bid knocked back for the highly sought after French international, but could rekindle their interest in him either in January or next summer. However, Arsenal are highly likely to face a battle with Italian giants Juventus to land his signature, with the Serie A outfit having made it very clear that they are also big admirers of the central-midfield ace.
