Mikel Arteta told to address Arsenal transfer mistake to help Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Ray Parlour has urged Arsenal to sign a new attacking midfielder this summer to ease the burden on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gunners are expected to be limited in the transfer window this summer as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mikel Arteta will still use the window to try and reshape his squad, with a key transfer decision needed on the future of Aubameyang.

James Benge Arsenal Q&A

The star striker has one year left on his current deal at the club and is yet to pen fresh terms.

Auabamyenag is the club's top goal-scorer this season with 17 Premier League goals and scored an additional 22 Premier League goals last season.

However, Parlour believes Arsenal have become too dependant on Aubameyang for goals and believes they need to sign an attacking midfielder to share the burden.

The former midfielder addressed the fact that the Gunners lost Aaron Ramsey to Juventus last summer - a decision which head of football Raul Sanllehi has admitted was a mistake - as another reason why a goalscoring midfielder should be a priority.

He told talkSPORT: "The goals are not really spread around the team are they with Arsenal?

"You get [Alexandre] Lacazette who can chip in with a few, [Mesut] Ozil probably doesn’t score enough for the position he plays.

"The midfield are very much more defensive minded, [Granit] Xhaka is not going to score you goals, [Lucas] Torreira’s not going to score you goals, they’ve lost Ramsey, who was the goalscorer from midfield.

"So, I look at an attacking midfielder who’s probably going to score you 10 goals a season, but you’re talking big money then, so spend."
