Mikel Arteta told the ideal January striker transfer for Arsenal - and it is not Dusan Vlahovic
Arsenal are said to be in pole position to sign Dusan Vlahovic from Fiorentina this month.
The Serbian forward has plenty of admirers from around Europe, with the Gunners thought to be one of them. According to The Athletic, Arsenal are in the 'strongest position' to complete the signing of the 21-year-old as it stands.
However, according to numerous reports, Fiorentina have slapped a £60million price tag on Vlahovic as they look to keep him for another season. The forward's contract in Florence is due to expire at the end of next season.
There are other options for Arsenal, of course, with Everton and England's Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak being linked with a move this month.
The Gunners have already been told that they should sign Calvert-Lewin, with the Everton striker producing some superb form in the Premier League over the past couple of years.
Former Liverpool star John Barnes, when speaking to Bonus Code Bets last month, described the England international as "brilliant" and said why Arsenal should move for him.
Barnes said: "Arsenal have been linked with Dominic Calvert-Lewin which would be a good signing for them. He's young, English, shows good commitment and effort, but he is currently an Everton player and right now, he won't want to leave there.
"The Everton fans love him, he’s doing well there, and he needs to show that level of consistency for club and country before he can think about moving to one of the bigger clubs.
"Realistically, he hasn't done a lot for Everton to even talk about him warranting a move. However, if he was to go to Arsenal, it would be a brilliant signing for both parties, especially Arsenal."
Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson agrees with Barnes that Calvert-Lewin would be an ideal fit at the Emirates Stadium.
Merson said: "Arsenal need to go out and buy Dominic Calvert-Lewin, as soon as he is fit. Put in a massive bid for him. They need a focal point up front who is good and strong.
"(He would go there) because it is the Arsenal. Tell me a reason why they (Everton) are a bigger club than Arsenal? Arsenal are going to finish above them. If Calvert-Lewin goes there, they can get into the top four."
How the stats compare...
It would not be too fair to compare Calvert-Lewin and Vlahovic's stats this season, with the former missing most of the campaign so far due to injury.
Last season, Vlahovic bagged himself 21 goals in 37 Serie A appearances, while Calvert-Lewin scored 16 times in 33 Premier League matches.
Vlahovic edges it when it comes to stats, but Calvert-Lewin could potentially be significantly cheaper than the Serbian.
