Mikel Arteta told how to get the best from Rob Holding and William Saliba could hold the key

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta must give Rob Holding a regular defensive partner to get the best out of him.

The 24-year-old started in Thursday night's win over Southampton and impressed in the 2-0 win.

But if Arteta wants him to shine on a regular basis, he must give him a defensive partner who is there to stay, rather than rotate the other centre-back position, according to Jamie Redknapp.

"He needs a partner," the former Liverpool and Spurs midfielder said on Sky Sports. "He is not sure about the other centre-backs, that’s pretty obvious.

"He mixes and matches and you need partnership.

"When Sol (Campbell) played, he always had a partner alongside him and that’s how you get better.

"It’s a real help when you know you are going to be playing week-in, week-out next to somebody.

"Especially centre-back, that’s probably the most vital to get used to someone, when they are going to make mistakes, reading situations."

Holding has made just 11 appearances for Arsenal across all competitions this season and has yet to be a part of a settled partnership at the heart of the defence, though the impending arrival of William Saliba after his loan spell with St Etienne could offer Mikel Arteta that opportunity.

The 24-year-old has started just three games in the league, making only four top-flight appearances in all but with Pablo Mari's injury likely ruling him out for the rest of the season he may get an opportunity to stake his claim before the season ends.
