Mikel Arteta told he's making a tactical mistake with Nicolas Pepe at Arsenal

Mikel Arteta is yet to find Nicolas Pepe's best position at Arsenal.

That's according to former Gunners midfielder Stewart Robson, who reckons it's still too soon to label the winger a flop, despite the fact he's Arsenal's all-time most expensive purchase.

Arsenal raised some eyebrows when they snubbed signing a world-class centre-back and splashed out £72million on another forward in August 2019.

But despite the huge fanfare, Pepe has failed to find a consistent run of form in north London with some pundits labelling the forward a 'flop'.

Robson disagrees, and has confidence Pepe will eventually prove his doubters wrong.

But first, it seems that Arsenal manager Arteta needs to find his best position.

"Slightly too early [to call him a flop]," Robson told ESPN.

"He hasn't been a great success this season so far. He's had one or two good games, couple of good free-kicks. I'm not sure they've found the right position for him.

"They've tried him on the right wing where he spent most of his time in France. Then they tried to play him upfront for a couple of games.

"Yet he's got pace, he can do lots of things. At the moment they haven't got the best out of him, he doesn't look a confident player. So he's a flop at the moment but I think he can get better next year under [Mikel] Arteta."
