Mikel Arteta told he cannot drop Arsenal duo despite tactics as Spurs and Chelsea decisions backfire

Mikel Arteta led Arsenal to their first win of the Premier League season with a 1-0 win against Norwich City lifting the Gunners from bottom of the table.

After conceding nine goals in their opening three games without reply, the north Londoners looked to their new signing Takehiro Tomiyasu to nurse their defensive and attacking woes.

Tomiyasu, who joined Arsenal on deadline day from Bologna for £19.8 million, was joined by the returning centre-half duo Gabriel Magalhães and Ben White.

The trio seamlessly slotted into Arteta's back four uniting with Kieran Tierney as the quartet offered a glimpse into the true reflection of the Gunners' defensive potential.

Arsenal proceeded to keep a clean sheet and built the foundations to what Gunners fans will hope is the core to reviving their European dreams, while also having the last laugh over a weekend of debuts to forget for some.

Jai Mcintosh, Fan Brands social producer, spoke to Bailey Keogh, The Arsenal Way writer and presenter, and Chris Davison, our Fan Brands content editor, to reflect upon Arteta's new-look defence while jibing fun at how neither Chelsea's Saul Niguez nor Tottenham's Emerson Royal had as good a debut as Tomiyasu, live on the Arsenal Way show via football.london's Arsenal Facebook page.

Mcintosh kickstarted the debate by drawing some of the more light-hearted positives from the Japan international's debut, in what could have been a disastrous weekend had the Gunners extended their faltering form.

"Chelsea's Saul had a pretty frightening debut; he lost possession nines times and was only on for 45 minutes," Mcintosh began. "It didn't fill fans with too much confidence.

"Emerson put in a few tough tackles on [Wilfried] Zaha but realistically he was spun inside and out over the full 90 and ended up conceding three so Tomiyasu's debut was something the Arsenal fans needed."

Our Fan Brands social producer continued, by detailing the Japan international's overriding qualities he displayed at the Emirates.

"It went well, he looked strong, good in the air, and a few good strikes," Mcintosh concluded, before Keogh added to the debate.

"It was needed [Tomiyasu's performance]," our The Arsenal Way writer and presenter said. "Our right-backs haven't performed in recent weeks - they've looked weak.

"Tomiyasu had a presence that we have missed so much - he won seven out of eight duels and he was good going forward. He linked up well with [Nicolas] Pepe - it was almost as if Pepe was unlocked because he went on to create the most chances."

Davison added to the discussion shining a light on the partnership between Gabriel and White, claiming it has to be the side's first-choice pairing.

"White looked a lot more comfortable [against Norwich] with Gabriel alongside him, who is one of our best centre-backs," he began.

"It's an exciting pairing with a lot of potential. This is going to be our main centre-back pairing moving forward. There's a lot more security and assurance with them together especially with Tierney out on the left and Tomiyasu coming in on the right too."
