Mikel Arteta tipped to perform Nicolas Pepe transfer u-turn after surprise Arsenal decision

Nicolas Pepe's days at Arsenal could be numbered.

That is the feeling of many Gunners supporters after the club's record £72m signing was overlooked in favour of Gabriel Martinelli to replace the injured Bukayo Saka during the 2-0 win over Newcastle United.

Given the right-wing is where Pepe is at his best and the Brazilian prefers to operate on the opposite flank or down the middle, it was somewhat of a surprise to see who Mikel Arteta turned to.

Or was it another indicator that the Ivory Coast international has slipped even further down the pecking order under the Spaniard and a January transfer could be on the cards?

Well, when speaking ahead of the Newcastle clash, Arteta moved to quash any talk of Pepe leaving in the new year amid links to the likes of the Magpies, Crystal Palace and AC Milan.

"No, and it is not the moment to talk about that either," the Arsenal manager said. "We are interested in Nico performing at the level that he can do.

"He had some really good moments since I have been here, some moments where he hasn’t participated that much, like everybody else."

Despite those comments, Arteta's actions on Saturday afternoon have spoken louder than anything he's said about the 26-year-old in the past few days.

And after snubbing Pepe in favour of Martinelli, there's a theory amongst Gunners supporters that the Spaniard is about to perform a u-turn and sell the winger either in January or next summer.

Take a look at what's been said on Twitter...

@projectf1t said: "Martinelli coming on ahead of Pepe must mean he is off in January/Summer. Arteta has never fancied him."

@SDGoonerCap said: "Pepe must be gone in the summer. Martinelli taking minutes on the right side now."

@GoonerSob said: "The fact that Arteta brought on Martinelli on RW ahead of Pepe is writing on the well for Pepe. He's unlikely to be here next season."
