Mikel Arteta spends close to £160million in transfer window following Arsenal backing

Mikel Arteta had another crazy deadline day as Arsenal were set to take their summer spending towards £160m with more ins and outs.

It is the most the club has ever spent in a single window and they were the biggest spenders in the Premier League.

They agreed and secured a £19.8m beat-the-deadline move for Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu to try and solve the right back issue.

That also signalled Hector Bellerin sealing a one-year loan switch to Real Betis with the Spanish club needing La Liga to fall into line with their spending rules.

Bellerin was keen to quit Arsenal this summer for a fresh challenge but it is a pure loan and he may have to return next year when he will only have 12 months left on his £110,000-a-week contract.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles is staying at Arsenal after clear-the-air talks with Arteta who had been left fuming with the England international’s social media post, pleading with the club to let him join Everton.

Maitland-Niles was told that he would have to be train away from the first team but Arteta gave him an olive branch, reassured him that he will still be part of his plans this season and will therefore stay.

Arsenal have backed Arteta to the hilt in this window after already spending £140m on Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale, Martin Odegaard, Nuno Tavares and Albert-Sambi Lokonga.

They did not get as many out as they hoped but Reiss Nelson joined Feyenoord on loan, keeper Alex Runarsson was set to join OH Leuven on loan but Eddie Nketiah is set to stay after a deal could not be agreed with Crystal Palace.

Brazil winger William also completed his switch to Corinthians having torn up the last two years of his £240,000-a-week contract with Arsenal, saving the club around £20m.
