Mikel Arteta sets ambitious Arsenal target following Wolves win

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has suggested that Arsenal could still finish in the Champions League places this season as they aim to play European football again next season.

The Gunners recorded a crucial 2-0 win over Wolves on Saturday, which took them to within three points and one position of their opponents.

Goals from Bukayo Saka and Alexandre Lacazette gave Arsenal their fourth win in a row in all competitions and majorly increased their chances of qualifying for Europe or even the Champions League next season.

The Gunners now sit in seventh place in the table, and are just six points adrift of Manchester United in fourth place, although should Chelsea pick up three points against Watford, that gap would increase to eight points.

Talking in his post-match press conference, Mikel Arteta was asked if his team were back in the race for the Champions League places.

"I'm in the race to try to win against Leicester and then let's see what happens," he answered.

"Weeks ago it looked impossible and the fixtures we had in the next few weeks. We try to improve every time and there's a better chance the better we play, the better we compete.

"At this level of intensity if we play like this against any team we will make it hard for them.

"Then we will see."

Arsenal’s next game comes against the Foxes, who sit in third place in the table.

A win at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night will take the Gunners to within six points of Leicester with just five games left to play.

After Leicester, Arsenal face the North London Derby against Tottenham before hosting Champions Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium ahead of games against Aston Villa and Watford.
