Mikel Arteta sent transfer warning on player who could send Arsenal into Premier League top four

Arsenal have been sent a warning as they reportedly continue to target Paris-Saint Germain midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum ahead of the January transfer window.

Wijnaldum only made the move to Paris during the summer after his contract with Liverpool expired but has struggled to nail down a place under Mauricio Pochettino.

Reports have recently stated that the Dutch midfielder would be open to a return to the Premier League and that Arsenal would be interested in bringing him on board.

Having won the Premier League and Champions League during his time at Anfield, he has been touted as a potentially huge signing for the Gunners.

"He's got the quality to take Arsenal to the top four," he said to the Football Insider in December.

"Arsenal are in a really strong position right now. Arteta should be knocking down the door of the owners and saying: ‘If you want Champions League football, here’s what I need."

However, a fresh warning over the move has now come from Steve McMananaman.

While Wijnaldum wanting a move away is all well and good, the former Liverpool winger turned pundit has warned that, due to how recent the player moved, the Gunners would have to pay a huge amount.

“It’s great going to Paris Saint-Germain, of course it is," McManaman said in an interview with HorseRacing.net.

"But then they brought Lionel Messi in, then Sergio Ramos. What looked like a nice project has probably turned into an ‘Oh my lord, what have I turned up to here?!’ situation.

“Wijnaldum went to PSG on a free and but anyone who wanted to sign him would have to pay for him now because he signed a long-term deal, on good wages so it would take a lot to get him away from there now.

"Barcelona were interested in him at one stage but they are in a bit of a mess. Any team would take him on his form for Liverpool but it all depends on finances.”
