Mikel Arteta sent Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang warning as Arsenal eye deal for World Cup winner

Here is your Arsenal morning digest on Sunday, January 17.

Aubameyang warning issued

Tony Cascarino has warned Mikel Arteta that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's situation could turn into something similar with what we've seen from Mesut Ozil.

Ozil looks set to leave the Gunners this month after being left out of Arteta 's Premier League and Europa League squad.

The former Germany international is currently the club's top earner, and Aubameyang was handed a new bumper contract over the summer.

Former Chelsea man Cascarino has issued a warning to the Arsenal chiefs about the club captain's situation.

"I feel really awkward about Arsenal and talking about Aubameyang because I’m talking about a guy with an incredible goalscoring record," Cascarino said on talkSPORT.

"But he hasn’t had one this year and I’m feeling like it’s Ozil 2.0.

"They’ve given him this ridiculous contract that’s so big, even though we all might go, ‘it should have been done, he’s been brilliant, he’s played such a high level of football that he’s got to be given the crown jewels’.

"[But] I’m not convinced Arsenal will keep going down this road of paying these players a wage that is way above other players at the football club."

Arsenal receive Barca blow

Arsenal have been dealt a potentially damaging blow in their reported attempts to sign Barcelona duo Neto and Riqui Puig.

The Gunners have been linked with both players in recent days, but now it has emerged that the Barca presidential elections have been delayed.

The date of the election was set to be this month, but it has now been pushed back to March 7 due to coronavirus restrictions in Catalonia.

Barca would likely be looking to replace Puig or Neto if they did leave the Nou Camp, but without a new board in place, signings are now unlikely.

Manager Ronald Koeman recently said: "The best thing would be to get a president in place as soon as possible because it would give us negotiating time.

"In the short term, it's important that we get some reinforcements in because we want to improve the squad. We need to be more effective and increase competition for places.

"There's many reasons to make signings, but I also understand the situation the club is in and if we can't make any signings then we'll wait for next season."

Gunners track World Cup winner

Arsenal are on a lookout for a new goalkeeper this January, despite the Gunners recording four successive clean sheets.

Runar Alex Runarsson was signed in the summer as back-up to Bernd Leno following Emiliano Martinez 's departure to Aston Villa.

However, there's been a series of shaky performances from Runarsson, and with Matt Macey also departing, Arteta is keen to bring a new shot-stopper to the club.

One player that is being looked at is Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, football.london understands.

The 23-year-old helped England win the under-20 World Cup back in 2017, saving a penalty in the final of the international tournament.

Now, he is on Arteta's shortlist, and football.london have also taken a look at four other shot-stoppers that could be looked at by the Gunners this month.
