Mikel Arteta says Arsenal squad must lift Bernd Leno after calamitous error against Chelsea

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta has defended Bernd Leno after his calamitous error proved costly in their 2-1 London derby defeat against Chelsea.

The Gunners had looked comfortable for the majority of the game after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's header put them in front.

But Leno was guilty of a horrendous mistake after failing to claim the ball from Mason Mount's free-kick and that allowed Jorginho to equalise.

The German was beaten again after Tammy Abraham's 87th-minute strike proved to be the winner with Leno the main source of criticism after the final whistle.

But Arteta, who is yet to win a game as Gunners manager, believes they must support the goalkeeper following his error.

"He will be down. When an error costs the team points, it's harder. We have to lift him," the Spaniard said.

"He's done a really good job since he joined this football club and we have to respect that. We just need to bring the confidence back in and that's it."

Arteta admitted he was "disappointed" with the manner in which his side handed victory to Chelsea, with Arsenal now 12 points off the Blues in the race for the top four.

But the 39-year-old insisted he can see positive signs from the players on the pitch since he took charge.

"I'm really disappointed with the result and the way we conceded the goals, and the timing of them as well," he added.

"I'm pleased with a lot of things that I've seen. I'm pleased with a lot of things we worked on in training that actually happened in the game, and how they bought into this.

"But I'm disappointed to lose the game obviously. We had to sustain that level for longer periods against a very, very physical team like Chelsea. We have to move on."
