Mikel Arteta's summer decision pays off with Arsenal ranked as Premier League's best

It took Calum Chambers just 23 seconds to break the deadlock after coming on as a substitute during Arsenal’s Carabao Cup clash with Leeds.

Replacing the injured Ben White, Chambers took his place in the visitors’ penalty area with his side having won a corner moments before his introduction.

But despite being rushed into the action, the defender reacted quickest to a Nicolas Pepe centre to head the Gunners into a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Once the referee had signalled the ball went over the line, Chambers sprinted straight over to the Arsenal technical area to celebrate with another that knows a thing or two about making an instant impact.

“It happened pretty quick!” Chambers said. “All the guys on the bench who were putting me on, the set-piece coach Nico [Nicolas Jover], the boss, they all said, ‘Go and score on your first touch.’

“So that was all that was in my head and yeah, it was nice to see it come off my head and go over the line. It was definitely a first and yeah, a pretty unique way to score.

“They were all getting in my ear as I came on, saying, ‘You’re going to score on your first touch’ and it convinced me, so you know, I had to go and run over to them and celebrate!”

Nicolas Jover was only drafted into Mikel Arteta’s coaching staff in the wake of Andreas Georgson’s decision to leave the club and join Malmo at the end of last season.

The Swede himself had only arrived in September 2020 as the dedicated set-piece coach, helping the Gunners become a more solid unit in those situations.

However, while they were able to stop their opponents, there was still a lack of cutting edge when it came to the other penalty area.

In fact, under Jover’s tutelage, Arsenal have already scored as many goals from corners (3) as they managed in the entirety of the last Premier League season.

Against Aston Villa, it was Thomas Partey’s clever near-post run and header that opened the scoring with Arteta’s side deploying vastly different tactics to last term.

According to Football.London, just two of Arsenal’s 23 corners have gone short, with the majority now whipped into the box.

There is also now a more clear plan when it comes to positioning with Jover focusing on the movement of the recipients, rather than the actual delivery.

While Jover’s exact methods will remain under wraps, the results are crystal clear. In nine Premier League games, Arsenal have scored five goals from set-pieces, a tally no other top-flight side can better.

Often seen as a soft touch in both boxes, the 2021/22 Gunners are proving they are a match for anyone when it comes to set-pieces.
