Mikel Arteta's reason for getting angry with Emile Smith Rowe - and John Terry's comment

Arsenal's Premier League defeat by Chelsea on Sunday was nothing short of a disaster for the Gunners.

Mikel Arteta's side were second best in every area of the pitch and the result proved beyond any reasonable doubt there is now a huge gulf in class between two of London's biggest clubs.

One moment of concern, among the many, was when Arteta was seen barking instructions at Gunners youngster Emile Smith Rowe.

According to football.london, the Arsenal boss was annoyed that the Englishman wasn't pressing the Chelsea players high up enough, and he made his voice heard.

Smith Rowe is said to have looked back at his boss with a bemused look on his face, suggesting he didn't quite understand the instruction.

The number 10 appeared unclear as to whether to stay or go, suggesting he was not on the same wavelength as Arteta.

Arteta's frustration would suggest Smith Rowe had a poor game against the Blues, but one man who was full of praise for the youngster was Chelsea legend, John Terry.

The former Blues skipper took to Instagram to upload a short clip of the Arsenal star storming through the Chelsea midfielder and captioned it: "Emile Smith Rowe is a player," alongside the clapping emoji.

Terry recently stepped down from his role as assistant at Aston Villa, but during his time with the Midlands club, he oversaw two bids made for Smith Rowe.

Arsenal rejected both before handing Smith Rowe the number 10 shirt, suggesting he'll play an important role for the Gunners this season.

But on Friday Arsenal snapped up Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid after his successful loan spell in north London last season.

The Gunners splashed out £30million on the Norway captain, suggesting he will be preferred over Smith Rowe in the same position under Arteta this campaign.

One man who believes this could have a detrimental effect on youngster is former Arsenal star Paul Merson, who told the Daily Star: "What sort of message does signing Odegaard send to Emile Smith Rowe?

"I can see why he held out signing a new contract. When Odegaard came on loan he ended up playing out on the wing. But Emile Smith Rowe is a No 10. He's the future at Arsenal. He came through the ranks and he makes things happen.

"He is the one who is going to suffer most from them buying Odegaard. What really is the difference between them anyway? I think they are too similar. But I know who's not getting picked if it starts going wrong and it won't be the £30m new signing…

"I know they both played in the same team last season but it was a problem. Smith Rowe didn't look comfortable on the wing. It's like making a centre-back play at right-back. However hard you try, sooner or later you're going to get dropped."
