Mikel Arteta's plan for Freddie Ljungberg when he becomes Arsenal manager

Arsenal are reportedly set to keep Freddie Ljungberg as part of the first-team picture once Mikel Arteta is appointed.

The Gunners have reached an agreement with Manchester City for Arteta to be the club's next manager.

Arteta is expected to be appointed before the end of the week and is set to take charge for the trip to former club Everton on Saturday.

Arsenal go into the clash at Goodison Park in 10th in the Premier League, already seven points adrift of the top four.

Ljungberg has been unable to revive his side's fortunes since becoming interim manager, winning just one of his five matches in charge.

But the Swede is set to be kept on by the club as part of Arteta's backroom staff.

Ljungberg was promoted to the first-team by Unai Emery in the summer, having previously worked with the club's Under-23s side.

ESPN reports Arteta is keen to keep Ljungberg on in some capacity, although the requirements of his role are unclear.

Ljungberg was due to face the media on Thursday morning but Arsenal have confirmed his press conference has been cancelled.

The Gunners are expected to announce the arrival of Arteta, with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola discussing his impending exit after his side's clash with Oxford.

“He has been with us for three-and-a-half seasons with us and there are no changes," said Guardiola.

"I don't have any news. We prepared the game as best as possible.

"I don't have to say anything more until there is new news.”
