Mikel Arteta's ideal Arsenal summer signing revealed as surprise £70m transfer target emerges

Is signing a centre-forward a necessity for Arsenal in the summer transfer window?

Despite seeing the side net 88 Premier League goals in the season just gone - a figure bettered than by only Manchester City across the entire division - it's a question that has been posed by a number of Gunners supporters and Mikel Arteta's view will ultimately be revealed within the next couple of months.

In the absence of an Erling Haaland or Harry Kane-type figure, the responsibility of scoring was shared across the Arsenal squad with Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard both netting 15, Bukayo Saka weighing in with 14 and Gabriel Jesus chipping in with 11 having missed a chunk of the campaign through injury.

But taking into account that the Brazilian endured an eight-game goal drought either side of the World Cup break and knee surgery, coupled with the north London outfit looking rather toothless against Brighton and Nottingham Forest towards the end of the campaign, perhaps extra firepower is required after all.

In fact, during our Q&A session earlier in the week, user: 'abhi143' was keen to find out of Arteta has plans to sign a new striker this summer, one of a different profile to Jesus by asking the following: "Any chance we go for Vlahovic or any other strikers?"

To which football.london's Chief Arsenal writer Kaya Kaynak responded by revealing that whilst the Spaniard does indeed have plans to bolster his attacking options that already includes Leandro Trossard and Eddie Nketiah, a deal for Dusan Vlahovic seems unlikely given Arteta's preferences.

"I for one would love to see Arsenal go for a striker this summer I think Eddie did a good job backing up Jesus during his injury but I just feel like the team could do with a different option up top," Kaynak said. "Someone like a Vlahovic could work, or maybe someone like an Ivan Toney who's got a good threat in the air although of course Toney's betting ban rules that one out.

"Unfortunately I've not heard anything to suggest Arsenal are targeting that type of player so far this window. Mikel Arteta wants more firepower in his front line, but it's likely to be more of an all-rounder who can play anywhere across the top like Trossard was in January."

Such comments are particularly intriguing given the rather surprising Kai Havertz to Arsenal rumour that has emerged in recent days. The Germany international can operate as the main striker, or from the right-wing which means he ticks the boxes as the ideal signing forward signing for Arteta.

Although it remains to be seen if Chelsea would be willing to do business with their London rivals especially for a player soon to be entering his prime years and it's also been reported that Havertz's £70m price-tag is an issue for the Gunners as well as La Liga giants Real Madrid.
