Mikel Arteta's five missed transfer targets as £170m of talent escapes Arsenal boss

Arsenal appear to have missed out on yet another transfer target.

The Gunners' move for Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was one that seemed to divide supporters as many wondered whether a transfer in the region of £30m for a No.2 stopper was really great business at a time when there are bigger needs elsewhere, but either way the 23-year-old was clearly a player Mikel Arteta wanted.

Ramsdale is said to have been devastated at the news that talks have now broken down over his switch, with the goalkeeper - who was England's third-choice at Euro 2020 - eyeing a return to the Premier League following successive relegations with Bournemouth and the Blades.

However it is now back to the drawing board for Arteta, who has grown used to missing out on targets during his brief spell in charge.

Here's a brief rundown of five of them.

Aaron Ramsdale - £30m

Having been linked with a move to Arsenal all summer long, Ramsdale's switch did appear to be quite far down the line as England's Euro 2020 third-choice prepared to put pen to paper on a move he dearly wanted.

However, with the Blades holding out for a fee close to £30m, the deal has now fallen through.

Ramsdale was expected to put pressure on Bernd Leno for the Gunners' No.1 spot, with his homegrown status another tick in the box.

Emi Buendia - £38m

After a brilliant season in which he was the main creative force for Norwich as they earned promotion, the Argentina international always looked destined for bigger things.

Arsenal had pushed themselves to the front of the queue for his signature, and there were seemingly free and clear in the chase before Aston Villa, splashing the cash that they perhaps knew was coming their way for the sale of Jack Grealish, jumped in and agreed a transfer for a fee that could rise to £38m.

Lautaro Martinez - £60m

Once considered a long-term target for Barcelona back when the idea of actually signing players and registering them to play for them wasn't a novel one, Martinez suddenly emerged on Arsenal's radar this summer.

A £60m deal was said to be in the offing, before all of a sudden everything went quiet and Martinez was strongly linked to rivals Spurs.

In truth any deal is closely tied in with both Romelu Lukaku's move to Chelsea and Harry Kane's potential one to Manchester City, but any work the Gunners did to get themselves to the front of the queue looks lost already.

The forward would have been a really impressive, exciting arrival, but now the chance seems gone.

Martin Odegaard - £42m

Of course the Norwegian was at the Gunners on loan last season, but the desire to make his switch a permanent one hasn't borne any fruit just yet.

Odegaard is a fine player, and would solve a lot of Arsenal's creativity problem, but with Carlo Ancelotti determined to take stock of his options having returned to Real Madrid, there is a reluctance to let him go.

A sizeable fee is also a big problem.

Ryan Bertrand - Free

Having decided not to renew his Southampton contract at the end of last season, a deal taking Bertrand to Arsenal on a free transfer had looked as though it was going to be a very impressive piece of business for the Gunners.

However, after talks had begun it soon became apparent that Leicester fancied adding Bertrand's experience too, and with James Justin currently out injured, Luke Thomas still on the raw side and long-serving Christian Fuchs leaving, Bertrand will go straight into the Foxes side this season.
