Mikel Arteta's first words on David Luiz and his future after Man City defeat

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has insisted that David Luiz's performance against Manchester City has not impacted the decision he will make about the defender.

The Brazilian is rapidly approaching the end of his contract and it remains to be seen whether the Gunners will activate the option they have on his deal. football.london understands that while the option of a one-year deal has now expired, talks have taken place around Luiz extending for a year but on a lower wage.

His performance against City attracted the headlines for the wrong reasons after his mistake allowed Raheem Sterling to open the scoring, before then conceding a penalty and receiving a red card early in the second half.

That led to increased vocal calls from frustrated supporters on social media who have called for Luiz to leave upon the end of his deal but Arteta has left the door open for an extension.

"He has spoken in the dressing room. He is someone that is very honest and straightforward. I'm sure he will talk to you guys and explain his feelings," he told Sky Sports.

"My opinion on David doesn't change. It won't change because he had a difficult performance tonight. This won't change a thing for me, no.

"Whatever we decide to do, whatever we have decided to do in the past few weeks, we will keep it internal."
