Mikel Arteta's failure to compromise makes clear Arsenal transfer priority

Another game, another Arsenal mistake leading to a goal.

Last weekend, it was Granit Xhaka who made the crucial error against Burnley after being given the ball in a dangerous area by Bernd Leno.

This time, Dani Ceballos was caught out after a poor decision by the goalkeeper to hand Olympiakos an equaliser in their Europa League clash.

Fortunately for Mikel Arteta, the Gunners were able to respond with Gabriel Magalhaes and Mohamed Elneny scoring late on to hand them control of the tie.

But the goal conceded was a familiar story, and something the Spaniard had to address after the game.

"We gave them a goal trying to play out from the back,” Arteta told BT Sport. “But then we reacted well to score two more goals.

“Overall a really positive result but we have to stop making the errors that are costing goals because we cannot sustain that.”

Arteta clearly accepts there is a problem. His players have regularly demonstrated an inability to play out from the back without giving away goals.

Yet instead of addressing the root cause of the issue, Arteta is adamant about one thing - he will not change his style. No compromises.

"It's not concentration it's about when you play the ball,” he declared. “It is not about the structure or the decision making.

“It's not about stopping the way we play because this is us and we get a lot of reward. It's about identifying when we do it and how we do it.”

Nearing the end of his first full season in charge, there has been little improvement in terms of giving away less goals.

Instead, the last week has shown the Gunners are still playing themselves into trouble as much as ever.

In a system focused on decision making in such areas, Arteta must be questioning whether he can trust some of his current players to make the right call.

Xhaka in particular has been guilty of poor decision making, with more errors leading directly to goals than any other player in the Premier League since he arrived.

Arteta has no doubt worked hard on the training ground over the course of the last year to instil his philosophy and pass on all he can, albeit with limited time due to the hectic schedule.

With the same players still delivering the same results, some Arsenal stars may simply be a lost cause.

With Arteta unwilling to make compromises and trust surely dwindling, there would appear to be only one solution - turning to the transfer market.

In an attacking capacity, Arsenal have found their rhythm.

Bukayo Saka has been electric out wide with Martin Odegaard and Emile Smith Rowe both making an impact since Arteta introduced a playmaker.

Defensively, however, mistakes continue to prove costly.

Any new manager will find players who are simply unable to adapt to his system, and with little flexibility in terms of the vision of playing out from the back, that has certainly been the case for Arteta.

Alongside Edu, he is facing a big transfer window to take his project to the next level.

Having already addressed problems elsewhere, finding players he can trust to play out from the back without making crucial mistakes is the obvious problem they must solve to kick-on.
