Mikel Arteta's experiment with Bukayo Saka could affect Thomas Partey if Arsenal seal transfer

The Bukayo Saka left-back experiment at Arsenal appears to be over.

But just as one door closes, another looks set to open for the Gunners wonderkid as a return to his natural position on the wing might not be a certainty based on this week's events.

When Kieran Tierney dislocated his shoulder against West Ham United shortly before Christmas in late 2019, Saka was needed to perform as an emergency left-back for an extended period.

The impact of Arsenal's lost match-day income

And despite it not being the teenager's favourite position, he certainly didn't let anyone down in the 10 Premier League appearances he made following the appointment of Mikel Arteta as head coach.

However, Saka's dream is to play further forward.

"I'm really enjoying my football under the new manager," Saka said before the Premier League was suspended back in March. "It's not my natural position [left-back] but he's given me all the advice I need.

"I've got Granit (Xhaka) behind, David (Luiz) supporting and speaking to me so it gives me licence to go and express myself in the final third and do what I can do.

"I feel like my dream was always to be a winger, to affect games, score goals and get assists.

"For now I'll do the job the manager asks me to."

Judging by Arsenal's two friendly matches against Charlton Athletic and Brentford, respectively, it's touch and go as to whether Saka gets his wish as Arteta has been experimenting even further.

In the first game - a 6-0 win for the Gunners - Saka is believed to have played as the left-winger, with photographs showing the youngster attacking the byline and looking to get crosses into the box for the strikers to attack.

Then against Brentford he played 45 minutes in an unfamiliar central midfield role alongside Joe Willock and Dani Ceballos.

It's clear that Arteta has big plans for Saka, but could it be in the middle of the park instead of out wide?

If so, the Spaniard would most likely have to switch from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3 and that could also have an affect on Thomas Partey who has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Should Arsenal sign the Ghana international in the summer transfer window, it could be that Arteta is planning to use him in a midfield three with Saka and someone else.
