Mikel Arteta's damning verdict on Nicolas Pepe and what happens next for Arsenal star

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has described Nicolas Pepe's actions as "unacceptable" after he was sent off in the goalless draw with Leeds United.

The Ivory Coast international saw red early in the second half at Elland Road following a VAR review into an off-the-ball incident, with Anthony Taylor showing him a straight red card after adjudging that Pepe had attempted to headbutt Leeds' Ezgjan Alioski.

It meant Arsenal were forced to play more than half an hour with ten men, with Pepe failing to seize his opportunity after being given a rare start in the Premier League as he now faces a three-game suspension, missing matches against Wolves, Tottenham and Burnley.

Arsenal held on for a point against Marcelo Bielsa's men and could even have won it late on, but the actions of Pepe did not impress Gunners' head coach Arteta, who was left fuming after the game.

“It is very clear, it is unacceptable," he said, speaking after the game.

"I will deal with the player."

How he deals with the player remains to be seen, but Pepe is certain to miss three games after his actions, with the Arsenal record signing possibly facing further punishment from his manager.

Arteta was also asked by the BBC if he expected Pepe to apologise for his actions.

In response, he said: “That depends on the player."

Arteta was, however, pleased with the response of his players and how they defended in the latter stages of the game, having fought well in the closing stages.
