Mikel Arteta responds to Jose Mourinho comment after north London derby defeat

Mikel Arteta has thanked Jose Mourinho for pointing out he has made great progress at Arsenal, despite Sunday's defeat.

The Gunners were beaten 2-1 by Tottenham in this weekend's north London derby, with goals from Son Heung-min and Toby Alderweireld cancelling out Alexandre Lacazette's sensational opening strike.

Mourinho hailed his side's attitude following the comeback, but reserved praise for Arteta, pointing out the Gunners boss has done a good job since taking over from Unai Emery.

In response, Arteta said: "Thank you, I can see what he's trying to do as well and look, he wins again, you know.

"It's two completely different styles and he manages really, really well.

"He has a really good team behind him and I said before in the press conference that I believe he always finds a way to win.

"When I give it to him I feel bad, but congratulations to them, they got the points today and we will move forwards."

On coming away from the derby with nothing, Arteta added: "I am disappointed and frustrated and really sorry for the boys first.

Mourinho hailed his side's attitude following the comeback (PA)

"The way they played today and the personality they showed today, to come into this ground and show who we are, to nullify the opponents and press them high, forcing them to kick the ball long and defend in a low block.

"That's exactly what we wanted to do. But obviously, if you give the two goals away that we have given against these players, it is very difficult to win a derby."
