Mikel Arteta responds to Arsenal fans' plane banner calling for Stan Kroenke decision

Mikel Arteta has hit back at the banner flown by Arsenal fans during the Gunners' defeat to Aston Villa.

A plane flew across Villa Park carrying a banner that said "Back Arteta, Kroenke out", calling on Gunners owner Stan Kroenke to leave the club.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Arteta shot down suggestions that he was not going to be backed by the club.

"They're very unlucky" - Mikel Arteta reveals his thoughts on Aston Villa ahead of Arsenal clash

The Gunners boss urged fans to come together and get behind the team.

"No, no, no," he said when the subject was brought up.

"The Kroenkes, the board and the sporting director - everybody, I feel full backing with them.

"What we don't know is a lot of things and we have to wait a little bit of time to be there.

"But backing and support? Hundred per cent, I don't need that.

"The fans have to believe what I'm saying because, if I did not believe it, I would not say that."

Defeat to Villa means the Gunners cannot finish in the top seven and are now relying on the FA Cup final to try and secure European football next season.

Arteta says the table is a reflection on the gap between Arsenal and the top teams in the division and that they have to work hard to cut the gap.

He said: "It tells you that the gap doesn't lie.

"The gap is with the top teams in the country and we have to make that gap smaller and smaller really quickly."
