Mikel Arteta refusing to ‘read between the lines’ as Martin Odegaard addresses Arsenal future

Mikel Arteta is refusing to “read between the lines” after Martin Odegaard hinted he could stay at Arsenal beyond this summer.

Odegaard is currently on loan at the Gunners from Real Madrid until the end of the season and he has excelled.

The Norwegian was voted the club’s player of the month for March and Arsenal are interested in keeping him on a permanent basis.

Odegaard, for his part, will wait until the summer before deciding his next move, but he said last week that “stability and development are key words”.

Many had taken that as a hint the 22-year-old was keen to stay at Arsenal, where he is playing regularly.

But Arteta said: “I don’t know, I don’t like to read between the lines,

“I speak with him every day, I see his face, his body language and he seems really happy right now here.

“Our contract with him until the end of the season but what we have to do is try to make him perform, develop and as happy as he can be.

“The team is going to be reflecting in better performances, better results and at the end of the season we’ll see where we are and have a discussion.”
