Mikel Arteta reacts to Tottenham hiring Antonio Conte as new boss

Antonio Conte is the newest face in a Premier League dugout, with the title-winning manager taking over at Tottenham this week.

The Italian, who won Serie A with Inter Milan last season, replaced Nuno Espirito Santo just days after Spurs' 3-0 defeat at home to Manchester United.

Conte got off to a winning start against Vitesse in the Europa Conference League, and now faces his first Premier League test with his new club as they travel to Goodison Park to face Everton on Sunday.

The arrival of the former Chelsea boss has been a big talking point all week, and now Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has had his say on the latest move from his club's old rivals.

Arteta's Arsenal brushed aside Spurs in the most recent North London Derby, one of five defeats suffered by Nuno in his 10 league games as manager.

When asked about the new appointment, the 39-year-old pointed to Conte's past achievements and acknowledged the arrival of the Italian is testament to the high level of competition in the Premier League.

"They made a decision to bring in somebody else, we know he [Conte] has had a really successful past in the last two places he has been, and we will see what he does here."

Conte's second and final season saw him bring Inter Milan their first Scudetto in more than a decade, but he opted to leave the Italian club shortly after the title win.

Before moving to the San Siro, Conte was successful in England with Chelsea, leading the Blues to their most recent Premier League title in 2016-17.

He also won Serie A three times with Juventus before moving to Stamford Bridge and led Inter to the final of the Europa League in 2020.

"I think that [the appointment] is incredibly positive for our league because it raises the level as it brings new ideas, the competition will be even harder," Arteta said.

Arteta's Arsenal are two points ahead of Spurs after 10 matches, with both sides aiming to return to the top six this season.

The teams were separated by a single point last season, with Tottenham finishing seventh and the Gunners just below them in eighth.

Spurs face an away game at Everton on Sunday afternoon, with Arsenal kicking off against Watford at the same time.

There's a bit of a wait for the first North London Derby between Arteta and Conte, though, with the rivals not meeting each other again in the league until January.
