Mikel Arteta reacts to fears Newcastle's new-found wealth could lead to Arsenal exodus

Newcastle United have all the ingredients in place for a busy January, with new owners and a new manager to go along with a struggling side in need of reinforcements.

The Magpies sit bottom of the Premier League, and are still chasing their first win of the season as they face Arsenal in Saturday's early kickoff.

They have been linked with a number of players from the Premier League and beyond as manager Eddie Howe attempts to build a squad capable of avoiding the drop.

Some of the names mentioned in connection with a move north include Arsenal players, but Gunners boss Mikel Arteta appears not to be worried about losing further members of his squad to the newly-minted club.

Newcastle's biggest summer signing saw Joe Willock arrive from Arsenal for £25m after a successful loan spell, while Willock's fellow midfielder Isaac Hayden also came through the Gunners' academy.

The takeover by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) has seen the club's spending power increase, with a January spree potentially on the cards.

Arsenal's Alexandre Lacazette is one of those suggested as a target for the club, with his contract situation potentially driving the price down, while Newcastle have previously been linked with moves for Rob Holding and Nicolas Pepe, among others.

Arteta was clear in his belief that there's little to worry about, though, explaining his position ahead of the game against Howe's team.

"I think players should stay at football clubs when they feel that they belong somewhere, when they feel important to it, when they feel valued in every single aspect and when that's the case, normally players want to stay," he said.

"When players start to decide something else, it's because they need something different in their futures, and that happens with any club that has financial power to convince anybody, or has other capacities," Arteta continued, suggesting resources alone won't be enough for Newcastle to pluck players from elsewhere in the Premier League.

"Sometimes it's not the financial power, sometimes it's sporting reasons, sometimes family reasons, sometimes it's a problem of adaptation. There are many different cases."

Victory for Arsenal against Newcastle would move Arteta's side level on points with fourth-place West Ham United, while leaving their opponents rooted to the bottom of the table.

The visitors can't immediately pull themselves out of the bottom three, but victory at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday followed by a further three points at home to Norwich City in midweek could be enough.

Howe is expected to take charge of his first game as Newcastle boss, having missed last weekend's draw with Brentford after testing positive for Covid.
