Mikel Arteta provides update on David Luiz after clash of heads with Raul Jimenez in Arsenal's loss to Wolves

David Luiz stayed on the pitch after his collision with Raul Jimenez after "responding really well" to the on-pitch tests from Arsenal's club doctor, according to Mikel Arteta.

The Brazil defender was involved in a nasty-looking clash of heads with the Mexican striker during the first half of the Gunners defeat to Wolves in the Premier League.

Luiz was briefly down after the clash but Jimenez fared much worse and required oxygen as he was stretchered off the pitch.

Questions were asked why Luiz was kept on after the serious head collision but Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says that the decision was made after the former Chelsea defender responded positively to the tests from club doctor Gary O'Driscoll.

"It was a rally tense situation because the collision was surprising straight away you could see the reaction of the players asking the docs to come on the fields which is never a good reaction and then I just had news from David.

"The doc made all the tests and followed all the protocols to make sure he was fine. He responded really well to all of them.

"But it was a nasty cut David wanted to continue but at half time we decided to take him out because he wasn’t comfortable heading the ball."

It is unclear whether Luiz will have recovered in time from his wound to be involved in Arsenal's Europa League game against Rapid Vienna on Thursday.

Arteta also sent wished a speedy recovery to Wolves' forward Raul Jimenez, who had to go to hospital immediately after the collision.

"And with Raul really concerned and worried. We wanted to send him best wishes for him and his family because it looked really nasty and hopefully he can make a good recovery."

After the match Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo revealed that Jimenez was conscious and responding to treatment well.
