Mikel Arteta provides Lucas Torreira update amid Atletico Madrid links & Thomas Partey swap deal

Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid.

The Uruguayan international is a reported target of the Spanish side, with the Gunners wanting to bring in Thomas Partey in the opposite direction.

Since arriving from Sampdoria in 2018, the 24-year-old has already played 89 times during his first two seasons in English football.

However, speculation has been building over Torreira’s future, with the Gunners set to be keen on bolstering their own midfield, with Partey and Lyon’s Houssem Aouar both set to be high on the club’s transfer priority list.

At present, Torreira is no closer to an exit from the club as manager Mikel Arteta gave on update on his future on Friday afternoon.

"We don't have any update on Lucas or any other player at the moment,” Arteta said when asked about whether Torreira was any closer to leaving north London.

This update is no different to Wednesday night when the Spaniard refused to be drawn on Torreira's future after leaving him out of the squad for the 2-0 win over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup.

"I'm not making decisions because players might leave or stay," Arteta said. "It's just for the players that we see every day in the best possible condition to compete and win football matches.

"I cannot discuss any internal matters."

Since joining Arsenal, Torreira has won the FA Cup and reached the final of the Europa League.

During the 2018/19 term, Torreira’s first with the club, only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alex Iwobi made more appearances than him in all competitions.
